Frequently Asked Questions

How does Hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy is a technique that uses relaxation, concentration, and focused attention to help you create an altered state of awareness. During this state, your subconscious mind becomes more open to positive suggestions and changes. It's a bit like being in a very relaxed, daydream-like state where you can focus on specific thoughts or tasks. The therapist guides you through this process, helping you explore and address your concerns or goals. You'll stay fully aware and in control the entire time, and you can come out of hypnosis whenever you want.

Am I giving up my free will if I have hypnotherapy?
Not at all. Hypnotherapy helps you make positive changes, but it can’t make you do anything you don’t want to or that goes against your beliefs. Hypnosis needs your agreement and participation. If you're not willing or if you resist, you can’t be hypnotised. You can always come out of hypnosis whenever you decide, although most people don't want to, as they really enjoy the deep sense of calm and relaxation hypnotherapy brings.

What does it feel like and what if I fall asleep during therapy?
While hypnotherapy isn't meant to put you to sleep, it is a possibility in session as you will feel so deeply relaxed (a bit like the dozy feeling you have just before you fall asleep and just after you wake up). But don't worry - it doesn't make the therapy any less effective. The brain keeps registering sensory input, even during sleep, just like how you wake up from sleep when you hear a sudden noise or see lightning!  Some people remember every part of the hypnotherapy session in great detail and others cannot remember much at all - both are right, as every individual's own experience is just right for them.

Can I hypnotise myself?
Yes, self-hypnosis can be a great way to relax and work on your issues. I may even give you a recording to listen to, to help you learn how to do this. With some practice, many people find it very helpful.

Does hypnotherapy work with children?
Yes, children can benefit from hypnotherapy too, due to their natural propensity to daydream and imaginative play. It’s often used to help with things like anxiety, trouble sleeping, or certain behavioural issues. With some children (especially younger children) it is often advisable for a parent to attend too, as this provides reassurance to both parent and child and it helps the child to continue to practice their new skills and thinking patterns in real-life settings at home, with the encouragement and support of their parent.

Is hypnosis real and safe?
Yes, hypnotherapy is a well-recognised method backed by scientific research. It has been successfully used for many years to help with various problems, but it is not a cure-all. There are certain conditions with which it is inadvisable to use hypnosis. However, a medical history declaration is taken before therapy commences to avoid difficulties occurring. However, there are many other brief strategic interventions and techniques that can be used to help that do not use formal hypnotherapeutic inductions, which are safe for most conditions. Online hypnotherapy has been shown to be just as effective as in-person hypnotherapy, so the choice is yours!

How many issues can I work on at once with hypnosis?
It can vary, but typically, hypnotherapy focuses on one main issue at a time for the best results. However, many people find that sessions impact several areas of their lives at once. Most issues can be improved in just a few sessions. My promise to you is that I will help you make the changes you need to reach your goals. While outcomes should never be guaranteed in therapy, progress and results greatly depend on how well we work together and how well you engage in the process and complete any independent practice given.
